Strategic Execution

FranklinCovey has a proven track record of helping colleges and universities achieve critical goals like student retention, completion, and enrollment with 4DX (The 4 Disciplines of Execution®).

Unique Challenges in Higher Education

Some common execution challenges for colleges and universities include:

Enrollment: Many colleges face the uncertain future of attracting and retaining students, primarily due to the struggle of maintaining relevancy and the rising costs of higher education.

Limited Resources: Many institutions operate with constrained budgets and staffing, which can limit their ability to provide comprehensive support services and programs across the institution.

Department Silos: Effective strategies require seamless coordination across multiple departments, and misalignment or communication gaps can impede the execution of retention and completion initiatives.

Improving Completions, Enrollment, and Credentials With 4DX

Learn how leaders from Greenville Technical College used 4DX to align staff and faculty on campus to achieve extraordinary results by increasing credentials awarded by 238% in one year.

“This is fun! I am loving this journey! It has been wonderful to see the excitement in every team. They really feel a sense of ownership. I’ve rolled out many things here over the years, and this is the first effort where we have very few complaints or comments about “just another thing we have to do” four years into our journey. That has been so encouraging and energizing.”

-Dr. Julie Eddy, Chief of Staff for the President

The 4DX System can support your strategic plan by aligning staff and faculty across campus to achieve a Wildly Important Goal® (WIG). Here are some common goals:

  • Student Enrollment

Aligned and coordinated goals across an institution can significantly enhance the execution of student enrollment objectives. When departments work towards a shared objective, they reduce redundancy and increase efficiency with greater focus. This alignment also facilitates better communication, data sharing, and collaboration, enabling a more comprehensive and strategic approach to attracting students.

  • Student Retention and Completion

By creating a consistent and supportive student experience across campus, institutions can improve student retention and completion. When administrators, staff, and faculty work towards a common goal, students receive more cohesive academic advising, timely support services, and clear pathways to graduation. This unified approach helps identify and address potential obstacles early, fosters employee engagement, and ensures that limited resources are effectively utilized to a unified objective.

  • Other Institutional Goals

By using 4DX to support your strategic plan, leaders can take on campus-wide initiatives, like:

Academic Credibility and Recognition: Institutions can measure specific goals that establish a culture of continuous improvement through regular curriculum reviews, integrating cutting-edge research, and promoting interdisciplinary collaboration.

Financial Sustainability and Growth: Leaders unite efforts across departments to identify cost-saving measures, pursue joint grant opportunities, and develop supportive programs that attract a diverse range of funding sources.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Unify your DEI efforts across departments to establish measurable goals for increasing enrollment and retention of underrepresented students through targeted outreach, tailored support services, and inclusive curricula.

Customer Stories

Jefferson Community and Technical College

Jefferson’s “Big Wig” is to increase our annual number of credentials awarded. We’ve outpaced our target each year—during the two years we’ve participated in 4DX, our annual count of degrees awarded grew by 14%. This success was stimulated by the efforts of faculty and staff at all levels of the institution. Faculty focused on increasing students’ academic success – for example, after the English Department implemented a WIG focused on course-based success, our highest-enrolling gateway course (ENG 101) pass rate increased by 2.4%, resulting in more students ready to move onto upper-level classes.

Greenville Technical College

“Greenville Technical College adopted 4DX to bring more of a disciplined focus to identifying and achieving goals. As we have moved past the implementation phase and incorporated it into our daily culture, it is obvious that staff and administration are putting more thought and analysis into identifying WIGs, Leads, and appropriate measures. In addition, 4DX has brought a structure to the institution that is inclusive of all staff and has put into place a clear and understandable method of accountability.”

Dr. Keith Miller, President Greenville Technical College

Ivy Tech Community College

Ivy Tech Community College is Indiana’s largest public postsecondary institution, with 19 campuses serving the diverse communities across the state. In January 2022, Ivy Tech began the journey of launching 4DX at each campus. Currently, 5 of the 19 campuses are fully implemented, with the others in various stages of implementation.

Ivy Tech’s primary WIG is focused on increasing the 8-week term to 8-week term student retention, and as the most recent term came to a close, Ivy Tech saw a 5% increase compared to last year. This was almost 3% over the target goal. Ivy Tech President Ellspermann applauded the team’s work, noting, “We have many people on our teams working to improve retention across the college outside of 4DX. However, there is no doubt that the work through 4DX is ‘shining a light’ on ‘a wildly important goal’ that is moving the needle!

Quote PNG

“4DX has had a significant impact on our ability to stay laser-focused on our most critical goals. Meeting weekly and making commitments provides more opportunity or college teams to work together, solve problems, and understand how their work contributes to overall objectives.”

— Dr. Robert Vela, President, Texas A&M University-Kingsvill
